Fallacy Hunt

1. 2008 Vice presentational Debate
Palin - She explains how if electing Obama will lead to a downturn in the economy. That is a POST HOC fallacy because she never made the clear connection between how Obama directly will change and cause the countries economy to down turn. I would refute that fallacy by being narrower and being more clear on why Obama would negatively impact the economy.

2. Lisa Murkowski - Alaskan Senator - Discussion on C-Span she states that Murder is wrong and therefore Abortion is wrong which is a clear Begging the Question Fallacy. Even though I personally believe that this statement is true; she is drawing conclusions without addressing the facts of both sides.

3. Congressman on C-span discuses how capital punishment is moral because our society needs something to discourage violent crimes. The connection between these two points are lacking factual evidence. There is no viable proof that capital punishment changes the outcome of crimes at all.

4. Margaret Thatcher 1989 Debate - The opposition states a sample unrepresentative fallacy by saying that there are more teachers than ever in the UK school systems. Margaret refutes it in her rebuttal by explaining how it is only logical there are more teachers in the UK school systems because the number of students have also drastically increased.

5.  British Parliament debate demo #1 via youtube -  - The prime minster makes the comparison between both World war 1 and world war 2 with the war over the environment. This is a false analogy fallacy because it is not logical to compare wars where millions of people died to a war for the environment. The war on environment would possibly save lives but definably would not kill millions like the world wars did.

Blog Post 2 - Types in College

Part one
How does your communication style based on your code relate to the following areas? (You may skip one area.)
ESTJ - Extroverted Thinking with Sensing
Choosing a major
  • Tend to choose major early and don't question it later
  • Desire a job that leads to immediate, tangible results

Learning style
  • Want to know exactly what is required to master the subject
  • Prefer step by step learning; may struggle with theory
  • Prefer instructors to present material clearly and logically and to arouse enthusiasm
  • Usually not convinced by anything but logic back by solid facts

Reading, writing, studying
  • Set study schedules and follow them
  • Prefer to study with others as long as they can it organized
  • Read just enough to be able to start a project
  • Good at public speaking and write best by dictating first draft.

Playing
  • Often leaders of campus groups, and participants and spectators at athletic events
  • Room mates may find them friendly but wanting to be in charge
  • Females may be outspoken males tend to play traditional roles
  • Tend to work hard at playing; enjoy competing

Possible causes of stress
  •  May take decisions too quickly
  • May stick to first decision rather than seek other possibilities that might solve the problem
  • Others not being logical
  • May criticize others with little awareness of its impact

Dealing with stress
  • Naturally good at getting organized and taking charge
  • Must be aware of rushing decisions; be willing to reconsider
  • Must balance criticisms by expressing appreciation
  • Trust hunches about the meaning of abstract test questions
  • Lowering expectations of others may reduce frustration

Part two

1. Select a person in your life who you would like to improve your communication with. (Roommate, boss, professor, parent, brother or sister, friend).
Girlfriend - Monica

2. Based on your observations of this person, guess their four letter code.
ISFJ - Introverted Sensing with Feeling

3. Compare and contrast your code with theirs.
Her code is significantly different than mine in multiple ways but at the same time we share some similarities. She deals with thoughts and issues internally more than I would. I would appear more confident because I am not shy to talk to people while she would appear a little more fearful because of her shyness. We are both focused on the practicality of school and other aspects of life. We look at the facts of a situation before we decide to make a decision.

4. List ways that you might adapt to their communication style to improve the relationship.
I need to be conscious that she may not feel as comfortable as me talking to people she doesn't know. I also need to realize that she enjoys communicating with me while in groups but prefers it to be in a 1 on 1 basis instead of being around people.
5. Give a specific example of what you will do differently.
When talking to people that I know but she doesn't I need to remember to specifically introduce her to them and take that initiative to do it for her.

Extra Credit - NU vs Portland State Debate

This post is to recognize that I was at the debate with NU and Portland state. This debate was on rejecting the american way of life. The government emphasized the idea that the United States and its citizens consume drastically more than they need to. Jacob Witt explained how the American way of consuming things actually helps support different countries. It is because we consume the products that they continue to export to us. After the entire debate I do believe that the government side ended up performing better.

Blog Post 1 - Goals and mission

A Goal is a Dream with a deadline
Fitness/Health - By the end of 2010 I want to consistently be working out and stay in shape. I will do this by walking straight from class to the Seahawks facility to start working out. This will cause me to start working out before getting distracted by different things at my dorm.

Spiritual - By the end of this school year at Northwest I would like to establish a consistent life of prayer and bible reading. This will cause me to dive into a deeper relationship with God.

The Challenge
Fitness/Health
Exercise- By January 1st I want to work out once a day for about 45 minutes. Ill do this by getting up earlier to do it before class and setting more time aside after school to realistically fit it in my schedule
Sleep- By November 1st I want to go to sleep before 12 A.M and have 8 hours of sleep each night. I will do this by starting my homework as soon as I enter my room.
Eating- By October 1st I want to consistently eat all the meals breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day. I will do this by managing my time throughout the day and leave time in the morning for food and time between classes for food.
Water-  By October 15th I want to drink at least 2 more bottles of water a day. I will do this by taking 1 bottle to class and then refilling it after I am done with that class.

Relationship Goals
Friends - In the next 2 weeks I want to make connections with old friends that have left to other states for school and work. I will do this by leaving reminders on my computer to check my facebook to see if they are on.
Opposite sex - By the end of September I want to have better management of when I talk to my girlfriend on the phone. I will do this by establishing times with her and make sure its clear that I need to stop talking by a specific time.
Room mates - By the end of this week, I want to connect with my floor mates more frequently. I will do this by leaving my room door open more often so that I can hear what is going on and also so they can stop by when they want.
Family - By December I would like to call each one of my siblings at least once a week and talk with them to catch up on each others lives. I will do this by using the time I walk to class as a time to make a call.

Spiritual Goals
Bible reading - By the end of this month I want to be reading my bible at least 6 out of 7 days. I want to focus on consistency instead of the amount I read each time.
Prayer Time - By November 1st, I want to increase my prayer time each day by 5-7 minutes by praying while I walk to class.
Ministry - By the end of this semester I want to bring up Jesus to people I am not friends with more often. I will do this by taking bold steps of meeting people that are out of my social group or my usual friends.
Church Attendance - By mid-October I want to attend my church's pre-service prayer time. I will do this by eating dinner earlier on Wednesdays so that I can leave earlier.
Core Group - By the end of the semester I would like to establish a core group for my church. It will be a small group of men from northwest that also attend the city church. This will not only keep me accountable but hopefully will make a impact on young men's lives at NU.

4.
Harrison Ford is like one of those sports cars that advertise acceleration from 0 to 60 m.p.h. in three or four seconds. He can go from slightly broody inaction to ferocious reaction in approximately the same time span. And he handles the tight turns and corkscrew twists of a suspense story without losing his balance or leaving skid marks on the film. But maybe the best and most interesting thing about him is that he doesn't look particularly sleek, quick, or powerful; until something or somebody causes him to gun his engine, he projects the seemly aura of the family sedan."
(Richard Schickel, review of Patriot Games in Time magazine)

A car being compared to Harrison Ford in Patriot Games is a great analogy. Both Harrison Ford and a fast car show a fierce attitude with a sense of appropriate aggression at the opportune times. The main thing that makes this comparison dissimilar is the fact that a car is a mechanical machine where as Harrison Ford is a human.
